Packers and movers in India — how to choose, what it costs, what to check
Finding packers and movers you can trust is the hardest part of any relocation. Rates are quoted verbally, paperwork arrives late or never, and the price on loading day is often not the price you were promised. The Movers Bilty directory takes a different approach: every moving company listed here runs its paperwork on our software, so the quotation, the bilty, the packing list and the GST invoice you receive are printed, numbered and sent to your WhatsApp within minutes. You contact the company directly — there is no commission, no lead fee and no paid ranking.
Moving services offered by packers and movers
Home relocation is the most common request: a 1 BHK to 4 BHK household packed, loaded, transported, unloaded and rearranged. Office moving covers workstations, cabins, server racks, files and modular furniture, usually over a weekend so the business loses no working day. Packing services can be booked on their own — cartons, bubble wrap, stretch film and wooden crating for glass, marble, art and large televisions. Vehicle transport moves cars and bikes on open or closed carriers with a condition report signed before loading. Local moving handles same-city shifts, single items and part loads, generally finished the same day. Long distance covers interstate and cross-country moves on dedicated or shared trucks with declared value and transit insurance. Warehousing gives you short or long term storage with an item-wise inventory in and out.
What packers and movers charge in India
For a local move within the same city, expect roughly ₹3,500–₹12,000 for a 1 BHK, ₹7,000–₹18,000 for a 2 BHK and ₹11,000–₹28,000 for a 3 BHK. Intercity shifting starts near ₹15,000 for a small load and can cross ₹60,000 for a large household going across the country. Car transport usually costs ₹8,000–₹18,000 and bike transport ₹4,500–₹9,500 depending on distance and whether the carrier is open or closed. Four things move these numbers more than anything else: the volume of goods, the floor and lift access at both ends, the grade of packing material, and the season — month-end, weekends and the weeks around Diwali cost 15–25% more than a mid-month weekday.
The four documents every mover should give you
Ask for these on every job, in this order. A written quotation after a survey, with packing material, labour, transport, GST, insurance and floor charges listed as separate lines — a single lump sum is where disputes begin. A packing list before loading, so every carton and item is recorded with its condition. A bilty or lorry receipt when the truck leaves, showing consignor, consignee, vehicle number, driver's mobile, number of packages, declared value, freight and whether goods travel at owner's risk or carrier's risk — this is the document insurers ask for. And a GST invoice at the end, which you will need if your employer is reimbursing the move. Companies on this directory issue all four from the Movers Bilty app.
How to compare quotations without getting caught out
Call two or three companies from your city page and ask each for a survey, in person or over a video call. Compare the itemised lines rather than the totals; the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive verified mover on a 2 BHK move is commonly ₹4,000 or more, and it is usually explained by packing grade and truck size rather than by service quality. Confirm whether transit insurance is included or extra, what percentage of declared value it covers, and how long you have to report damage — 24 to 48 hours from delivery is standard. For long-distance moves, ask whether the truck is dedicated to your goods or shared with other consignments: a part load is cheaper but can add several days, so get the delivery window in writing either way.
Paying safely
A booking advance of 20–25% after the survey is normal. A demand for full payment before loading is not, and it is the most common pattern in moving scams. Pay by UPI or bank transfer so there is a record, always against a receipt, and settle the balance after unloading and after checking the goods against the packing list. Photograph fragile items and the backs of appliances before packing starts — five minutes of photos settles most damage arguments before they begin. Finally, check the GST number on gst.gov.in if you need a tax invoice, and keep the bilty until the last carton is unpacked.
